Healthy Pet Rabbit Diet

What should a rabbit's diet consist of?

Your rabbits’ diet plan should include clean water and at least one bundle, about the size of your pet, of high-quality hay per day.  The best diet plans also provide a controlled portion of leafy greens about 1 cup per 2 lbs. and quality brand pellets. Alfalfa based pellets for junior rabbits and Timothy based pellets for rabbits over 6 months. Between one-quarter & one-half cups of pellets a day depending on your pet’s size is appropriate. Additionally, a small amount of fresh foods such as carrot or apple can also be given as an treat daily or weekly depending on the portion size.

Rabbit Cages & Housing

So now that you have your new bunny – where is he going to live? There are pre-made rabbit ‘condos’ or more traditional cages to purchase, you can build your own enclosure, or your rabbit can live in a room in your home. Whichever you choose, here are some basic guidelines to help.

Rabbits should have plenty of room in their pen for a litter box, food bowl, water bowl, and toys. Some rabbits also like to have blankets or towels to bunch up and lay on. There should be enough room for the rabbit to ‘flop-out’ for a nap, sit upright without crouching, and periscope up to see what is going on somewhere else. Ramps or shelves in their living area can provide hours of entertainment.

Because many cages advertised for rabbits don’t really provide enough room for all these supplies, think about other ways to house your rabbit. What about a large dog crate? A puppy exercise pen? Building one from grids designed for shelving? You will find example of a bunny ‘condo’ in the 2019 cage tour video below.

A good minimum size cage is 4’ by 2’ for a rabbit who is approximately 5-6 pounds at adult size. Obviously, if your rabbit is bigger, a larger cage is needed. If you have a baby bunny, think about how big he will get when he is grown up!

DO NOT use aquariums or solid walled enclosures. The ammonia from their urine will build up and irritate their nose and lungs, causing health problems. Remember to choose a cage or pen with a door big enough to fit the litterbox in and out!

Inexpensive Bunny Home

Portable wire exercise pens are the most versatile, the easiest to clean, and the best way to give your rabbit what they need. Space, toys and a clean environment of their own while living inside with you! For those who want a quick housing solution without spending a lot of time and money, the wire (X-pens also called puppy pens) gives you the best housing for your money, without a lot of work and helps your rabbit feel at home in their own space. Exercise pens allow for the bunny to see what is going on around them. This gives a feeling of knowing what's happening and of being included in the household activities.

Exercise pens are made up of eight heavy-gauge wire panels, connected together, so that they can be stretched out and shaped into a square, rectangle, octagon, or whatever shape you want. Each panel is 24" wide. The total space when panels are made into a square is 4' x 4', or 16 square feet. Minimum Cage requirements in the US is 8 square feet. So this is well above the minimum and provides adequate housing for your bun or a bonded pair. When purchasing the pens, you can choose from these heights: 24", 30", 36", 42". I recommend a 30" height or higher.

When not in use, the panels fold up like an accordion and can be easily stored in a closet. They can also be easily transported by car to another location. For a larger space, many people choose a corner of a room, using the two corner walls as walls of the pen. This makes an even bigger space for the rabbit, since you have all eight panels to complete just two sides of the pen. Exercise pens are a good solution for blocking off areas in your home where you don't want bunny to go. If you have a jumper an easy solution is to cover the top of the pen. I use a sheet to cover tops and binder clips, from the office supply section, to secure.

Flooring can be complex or simple. You may use any type of flooring you wish, as long as it's safe for the bunny. To make a simple floor you may use a medium plastic furniture cover placed down on any floor surface then lay down a sheet, fleece blanket or a rug on top. This makes an immediately home for your bunny. All you need to add is food water crocks, hay basket, litter box and a few toys. This makes for an instant environment where bunny can live happily and safely.
